I’ve been cleaning carpets in Boulder Colorado for over 20 years and clients tell me all the time that their last carpet cleaner didn’t seem to take enough time while cleaning their carpet.  An unbiased answer can be reached by asking a few more questions which will expose a fair answer.  Did the carpet cleaner vacuum the carpets first or have you vacuum the carpets before their arrival?  Over 80% of the soil in carpet can be removed by vacuuming first. If the carpet cleaner begins without this first step, the dirt will turn into mud when the carpets get wet. Not good.

Did the carpet cleaner inspect the carpets for stains, looseness, and damage before they began?  Many of your carpet stains are mysterious in their origin and by asking you what they are from, the carpet cleaner can treat these stains properly.  Many carpets are not installed properly and are loose.  These  carpets may relax even more upon cleaning and look even looser.  This is a good thing to know ahead of time so that your clients heart does not leap in their throat when they see very loose carpets after cleaning.  Loose carpets should return to their previous state of looseness after the carpets are dry, but they should be stretched so that they will wear properly. In over 20 years of cleaning carpets, I have never had a carpet not return to how loose it was before cleaning, after the carpets had a chance to dry.  I have had several clients in Boulder not realize that they had holes or damage in their carpet and if I did not point it out during pre inspection, they would have felt that my Boulder Carpet Cleaning Masters company was to blame. After pre inspection the carpet cleaner should prespray all the carpets and treat the special stains.

Many carpet cleaners in Boulder only  prespray the stains and not the whole carpet. Why? It is much faster and cheaper to do it this way.  It is common practice in some of larger National carpet cleaning chains to only prespray spots to save both money and time.  This is kinda like taking a pair of jeans that you have worn every day for a month and sticking soap on the spots, dipping them in the washer and throwing them into the dryer. You would end up with very dirty jeans with a few clean spots on them.  It is  also like using the cheap car wash that doesn’t use a pre soak.  The car looks great while it is wet but, when it dries it looks all splotchy with clean and dirty spots.  Many carpet cleaners in Boulder and other areas simply do not know why they prespray, so they don’t do it.  Now we are ready to actually begin cleaning. The carpets are vacuumed and pre conditioned to loosen the soils.

Most carpet cleaning companies use two wet passes and one dry pass when cleaning carpets. This is a good question to ask a perspective carpet cleaning company. The more passes your carpets receive the cleaner they can become. However, a dry pass is always necessary, in order to extract the soils, soap and extra water. Every carpet cleaner should walk through every job with their client at the end of the job. If their are permanent stains that wont come out, the carpet cleaner should point them out and tell the client what they tried in order to get the stain out and if their are any options like spot dyeing or a replacement piece.  Hopefully the carpet cleaner saw this stain in the pre inspection and pointed it out before they began the job.  We have an old saying in the carpet cleaning industry, “If you see a permanent stain and show your client before the job it is their stain but if you miss the stain during pre inspection it becomes your stain.”  In many cases the client may not even realize that the stain exists and think that the carpet cleaner caused the stain. Not good at all!

In conclusion every carpet cleaning company should take the time to pre inspect the carpet and note any special problems, vacuum the carpets before they wet them, prespray all the carpets that are being cleaned, make sure that all the carpet gets both a wet and dry pass and finally a final walk through to inspect all the area that was cleaned.
